Thrifty Pinterest Project: Crayon Art «

Goodwill. Good Cause.

If you happen to be on Pinterest, there’s a good chance you’ve run across one of the many spectacular crayon art photos. It is one of those projects that is simple to do, but packs a big statement when hanging on the wall. You can proudly say, “why yes, yes I DID make that,” and be perfectly honest. Not only can you make your own version, but you can save a few pennies too. For instance, one quick trip to the Castleton Goodwill in Indianapolis provided me with a .99 frame and canvas combo.

Sure, that’s one fine pelican painting, but being at Goodwill signifies this is a canvas waiting for a new life. Walk around and see if you can find a box of crayons to go with your canvas. I’ve had two boxes of crayons sitting around collecting dust so I had no need of searching.

To do the crayon project, you’ll need the following:

Canvas

Gesso (if canvas isn’t blank)

Masking Tape (if you need to protect a frame or make a pattern)

Crayons

Newspaper, tin foil, tarp ( to protect your work surface)

Hot glue gun

Heat gun or hair dryer

Step one, rid yourself of whatever the original painting is with a layer of Gesso (similar to primer, but for canvas). To do this, first tape around the frame if your canvas comes attached to one. This protects the wood from unwanted color, and later the dripping crayons. Next, pour a little gesso on the canvas and brush it to spread evenly. If you’ve been successful, the prior image won’t show through. Two coats is generally all that’s needed.

Step two, sort out your crayons and color scheme then use a hot glue gun to glue them on. You can choose to remove the crayons paper or leave it on, either way works.

Step three, (optional) make a letter or shape from masking tape that you don’t want the crayons running through. For example, I’ve chosen to cut out a heart shape and let the pinks and purples run over it. Stick your shape or letter on the canvas where you want it to show. Be sure to have newspaper, tinfoil, or something that protects your surface from any melting crayon bits. Prop up your canvas and grab your heat gun (or hair dryer).

Step four, melt the crayons. Since you are directly applying lots of heat to paper (if your crayons are covered) and canvas, you’ll want to move your heat gun back and forth slowly over a small section of crayons. Avoid leaving it still to prevent any fire hazards. You’ll first start to see the crayons become very shiny as the wax begins to soften. Then, it all begins to run.

You can tilt the canvas to cause the streams of crayon to run different directions if you want to create a different look, otherwise, let gravity do the work.

Once you’ve melted the crayons to your desired look, wait just a moment for the wax to dry a little, but not so long that the wax becomes cold. It’s better to peel your shape off when the wax is still warm. If your tape didn’t hold out all the wax from your shape, go ahead and scrape any unwanted wax off, then cover with gesso if needed.

Finally, peel the tape from the frame and voila! Your very own thrifty Pinterest art project!
